Dr Lawrence Tal, Partner of TWCOG LLP, is an expert in the resolution of quantum and regulatory disputes in oil, gas, and LNG transactions.
He has advised on cross-border regulatory, financial, and political issues impacting energy contracts and on price adjustments in M&A transactions. He holds a D.Phil. and M.Phil. from Oxford University, where he was the John M. Olin Fellow at St. Antony’s College and Lecturer in Politics at Trinity College.
Lawrence has held industry and capital markets senior management roles, including Managing Director, M&A for Rio Tinto, Vice President for Shell E&P International, Senior Negotiator and Manager for Shell Gas & Power, and Head of Energy and Senior Portfolio Manager for CQS Investment Management.

- Appointed as Expert and project managed several major European gas Price Reviews in arbitration for clients such as Uniper, PGNiG, and Engie
- Previous client work on oil and gas disputes and arbitration includes projects for RWE Supply and Trading, CNPC,
- Led the successful sale of part of Shell’s stake in the $800 million Hazira LNG project in India to Total. He also led negotiations with Repsol, BG, and HPCL.
- Advised on the sale of the Rio Tinto Alcan Kitimat port and associated land to LNG Canada (Shell, Petronas, KOGAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi).
- Led negotiations for Rio Tinto’s move to control of Ivanhoe Mines, securing a majority position in the Oyu Tolgoi Mine in Mongolia.
