Senior Consultant

Paul Oliver is a widely respected player in the oil and gas shipping industry with over 35 years’ experience, most recently obtained in the LNG and LNG shipping sectors.  Paul combines expertise in all aspects of oil and gas shipping, covering business development, operational and commercial management, with broader experience of the LNG sector.

Prior to taking up the role of independent consultant, Paul held senior positions within BP and on secondment from BP, including most recently leadership of Australia’s North West Shelf (NWS) Venture joint marketing and shipping organizations and leadership of an LNG ship management company, based in Hong Kong.

Paul holds a BSc (1st class) and an MSc (Distinction) in Naval Architecture and a Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law and is a Sloan Fellow of London Business School.

Some of Paul’s recent assignments include:

  • Acted as expert witness in multi-million $ arbitration involving parties to a long term LNG SPA.
  • Led strategy review for the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO).
  • As General Manager of the North West Shelf (NWS) Shipping Service Company, reporting to a Board representing the Venture participants BP, Chevron, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Shell and Woodside, led the shipping phase of Australia’s largest LNG export project, ensuring safe and reliable shipping operations to support delivered LNG sales to Japan.
  • As President of NWS Gas, led the NWS Venture’s joint marketing organisation, concurrently with the leadership of NWS Shipping Service Company. Led teams in Perth and Tokyo conducting commercial negotiations and operations with Japanese LNG buyers and maintained relationships with senior Japanese buyers.
  • As General Manager of China LNG Shipping (International) Co. Ltd., managed a fleet consisting of the first 6 Chinese built LNG ships, accountable to shareholders COSCO, China Merchants and BP and serving LNG terminals in Guangdong, Fujian and Shanghai.
